Episode 4: Training in a Virtual Environment

Dr. Williams explains how rehearsing the "choreography" of spacewalks can be accomplished using sophisticated interactive virtual reality computer programs. The podcast gives additional glimpses into the unique challenges of doing complex work on the International Space Station when night and day change every 45 minutes, necessitating flexibility, innovation, and lots of practice before mission launch by this highly specialized "construction crew".

Episode 5: STS 118 Spacewalks

EVA Mission: install massive pieces of hardware with the help of the station's robotic arm, with only a couple of inches of clearance. Add the harsh environment of space to the mix and it's quite a challenge. Are you up for the job?

Deliverables

6 English & 6 French documentary videos delivered as video podcasts and compilation DVD's

Challenge

To harness new-age communications technologies in order to create interest in Canada’s space program and aerospace industry; to connect science to the space program in a way that will interest and intrigue students in mid-primary school and up; to positively portray the Canadian Space Agency as a progressive, highly competent organization working for all Canadians.

Strategies

We leveraged the very unique and engaging personality of Dr. Dave Willliams, Canadian Space Agency astronaut and physician, and created exceptional video tools that allow him to show how a fascinating blend of scientific disciplines, physical training, and virtual reality all come into play as he and fellow crew members prepare for the NASA STS-118 mission.

Tools

HyperActive has created a series of English and French video podcasts under the overall title “My Body in Space”, featuring Dr. Williams. The astronaut explains topics that include preparation on land in underwater and virtual environments; about how the human body adjusts and adapts to living in a zero gravity environment for extended periods of time; about working in a weightless environment and the demands it puts on the body; and more.

Results

The podcasts were be deployed by the Canadian Space Agency in a timeframe that is linked to NASA shuttle STS-118 mission, August 2007.
