Challenge

As is the case in many industries, there is a looming labour shortage in the plastics industry. The Canadian Plastics Sector Council identified the need to show the range of interesting careers in Canada’s plastics industry by having those careers presented by young people “on the job”. The challenge was also to destroy the myths of plastics industry jobs as being low-tech, poorly paid, and environmentally unsound, and show the importance of plastics to daily life in Canada, and to its economic future.

Strategies

Create interest and excitement about careers in plastic by creating a powerful video showing a range of entry-level, scientific, manufacturing, and other positions. Showcase the most interesting applications: a company that makes NHL goalie and other sports equipment, another that specializes in airplanes and aerospace, and several others across the country.

Tools

A vibrant 15-minute video, shot in High Definition in locations from coast to coast.

Results

This video has been highly successful in showings to high school and community college-age students, and is being prepared for web dissemination through video web modules. The video has been a big hit with educators, guidance counsellors, and members of the industry as they work toward attracting the next generation of Canadian plastics workers.
